Day 19: How Is Christmas In the US Different From the UK?

Do you know how the Christmas in the US is different from the British Christmas? No? Then you are in the right place and right time because today you will know!

Hi and Welcome to the advent edition of my podcast My Life and Other Funny Stories. In this edition, I bring you a new short Christmas-themed episode every day of December until Christmas. If you want to read the transcript of this episode, click the link in the description!

Today we will talk about the differences between American Christmas and British Christmas. We have already talked about the typical meals in those countries and their difference so I am not going to talk about that. But what else is different?

First of all, the British don’t have Santa Claus but Father Christmas. As you might remember from episode 13, American children also leave cookies and milk for their gift-giver.

Another difference is decorating. Have you ever seen houses in the US during Christmas? They just go crazy when it comes to Christmas lights and decorations. It is like a competition of who can have a more festive house. Meanwhile, in the UK, they don’t really go overboard.

Then there are the Christmas crackers. Do you remember them from day 3? Pulling a Christmas cracker is a strictly British tradition and you WILL not see any American doing that in their home.

Also, I read that there is a British tradition of going to the pub on Christmas day. People are bringing their families and even dogs to the pubs and talking with each other, celebrating this festive day before they sit down at the table in the evening. Weird, huh?

Those are the main ones I came across. Do you know about any that I didn’t mention? Let me know!
